Wig Grants

At Variety – the Children’s Charity, we support children who have experienced permanent hair loss due to conditions such as Alopecia or other medical conditions, by helping them access a wig that restores confidence and a sense of self.

Specialised wigs can cost up to $6,000 and may only last two to three years, making them out of reach for many families. That’s why we’re here to help. Through our Wigs Grant, Variety can provide up to $5,000 towards the cost of a human or synthetic hair wig to help make this support more accessible.

Families are welcome to choose a wig supplier that best suits their child’s needs, and we also encourage checking with your GP or specialist about any available government subsidies in your state or territory.
Wig Grant applications are open all year for families across Australia with applications managed nationally through Variety office in NSW/ACT. Clicking on the "Apply Now" link will redirect you to their online portal to submit your application.

Wigs Grant guidelines are updated from time to time, so before starting your online application, please take a moment to read them carefully. This ensures you’re eligible and have everything you need for a smooth and supported application process.

Your child may be eligible for a wig subsidy from your State Government..

The State-Wide Equipment Program (SWEP) may be able to help with funding towards the cost of human hair wigs. Eligibility varies, so families are encouraged to speak with their health professional or visit the SWEP website for more information.

Approved applicants with alopecia may be able to access subsidies for human hair or synthetic wigs through Enable NSW.
A doctor’s letter or supporting evidence is usually required, and applications may take around 3–6 months to process.

The ACT Equipment Scheme (ACTES) provides wigs for eligible people living with a life-long or long-term disability.
You can apply through your GP, specialist, or primary health therapist — they will help complete and submit the ACTES application form on your behalf.

The Department for Families and Communities (DFC) Equipment Program may provide wigs or contribute to the cost for eligible applicants. Speak to your health professional to check if you qualify.

Financial assistance may be available for people with alopecia who have a doctor’s referral, along with a DVA Pensioner or Health Care Card.
For more information, contact DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372).

At this time, WA, QLD and NT do not offer government subsidies for wigs. Families in these states are encouraged to explore Variety’s Wigs Grants for support.
