Held on Cable Beach in Broome, the Kimberley 9s brings together students from schools across the region to celebrate teamwork, culture, and connection. Delivered in partnership with the Purple Hands Foundation and supported by the Fremantle Dockers, it combines the energy of football with a clear purpose - to encourage school attendance and positive participation.
To take part, students must maintain regular school attendance throughout the year. The Kimberley 9s acts as both an incentive and a reward - a goal that keeps young people showing up, learning, and working together. In the lead-up, participating schools complete classroom-based workshops focused on teamwork, wellbeing, and life skills, helping students understand how effort and attitude off the field matter just as much as on it.
For many children living in remote communities, this opportunity means travelling long distances to play and connect with other students from across the Kimberley. It’s a rare chance to represent their school, meet AFL mentors, and build pride in what they’ve achieved together.
In 2025, Variety WA contributed $10,000 to help make the Kimberley 9s possible. The funding covered essential costs such as transport, accommodation, and logistics, ensuring every eligible child could take part, regardless of circumstance. Teachers have reported stronger attendance, improved engagement, and a noticeable lift in confidence among students who participate - tangible outcomes that show how sport can be a pathway to education and inclusion.
The Kimberley 9s embodies the shared vision of Variety WA and the Purple Hands Foundation: giving every child the opportunity to learn, belong, and succeed. By reducing the barriers of distance and access, the program motivates students to stay in school, stay connected to their communities, and take real pride in their achievements.
Every Child Deserves to Thrive
Change Takes All Of Us
Every child deserves the chance to explore, grow, and dream without limits. Their potential shouldn’t be defined by disability, illness, or financial hardship. We work to remove those barriers and open the doors to new possibilities.
