The Variety Bash was founded in 1985 by entrepreneur and adventurer Dick Smith.

Inspired by the legendary Redex Trials of his childhood, Dick approached Variety Club Australia with an idea: take a group of friends in old cars on an unforgettable outback journey while raising money for children in need.

The very first event, known as the Bourke to Burketown Bash, departed from the Sydney Opera House on 1 June 1985 before travelling more than 3,100 kilometres across Australia.

Fifty-two pre-1965 vehicles and around 200 participants took part, raising an incredible $250,000. Those funds purchased 15 Sunshine Coaches and helped Variety exceed $1 million in grants for the first time in its history.

No one could have imagined that one adventure would grow into a national tradition.

The Variety Bash has never been a race, rally or speed trial.

From the very beginning, it was designed as "a drive through the outback with a few mates."

That spirit remains unchanged today.

The only real competition is who can have the most fun while making the biggest difference for kids in need.

One of the Bash's longest-standing traditions is that participating vehicles must be at least 25 years old and remain largely true to their original design. The creativity comes from their colourful themes, costumes and personalities—not from speed.

For many participants, the Variety Bash becomes much more than an annual event.

It creates lifelong friendships, unforgettable adventures and the opportunity to see first-hand how fundraising changes the lives of children and families.

Every kilometre travelled helps provide equipment, services and opportunities that give children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

That's what the Variety Bash has always been about.
