Sunshine Ahead for Kids with Limited Speech

Dozens more children with complex communication needs will have the chance to find their voices thanks to a generous donation from the Morning Sunshine Foundation, set to expand the life changing Variety Motor Mouth Camp.

Part of a two-year funding commitment, the significant contribution will double the capacity of the program in Western Australia through the addition of a second annual camp, and establish a new camp in Queensland for the first time.

The Variety Motor Mouth Camp empowers children who have limited speech and rely on an electronic communication device/talker (called Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices) to better express themselves.

Over three days, families receive one-on-one support from speech pathologists and occupational therapists. Each camp provides workshops tailored for young AAC users, respite and AAC tips for siblings who often act as young carers, and practical training for parents and carers, to build the whole family’s confidence using their AAC device.

Chris Chatterton, CEO of Variety – the Children’s Charity of Western Australia said the Morning Sunshine Foundation’s funding will enable the program to be expanded to meet current demand.

“Unfortunately in recent years, for every one family offered a place at camp, we have had to turn another two families away.  Thanks to the Morning Sunshine Foundation, we’ll be able to introduce a second annual Western Australian camp in April 2026, so even more families can access the support they need,” he said.

“This funding also enables us to establish the Variety Motor Mouth Camp in Queensland, launching in November 2025 – expanding the program’s reach and impact across the country.”

A Morning Sunshine Foundation representative said: “We recognise the transformational difference the Variety Motor Mouth Camp makes for children with complex communication needs and their families. Our partnership in this program reflects our commitment to helping build a brighter future for every child, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact the expanded camp program will have.”
