Sonny's story...
5 year old Sonny lives with Perthes Disease and has been non-weight bearing since February 2017. In order to protect is joints, Sonny is confined to a wheelchair indefinitely.
At kindergarten, Sonny enjoys a wide variety of activities – but none quite as much as sport. He has a natural affinity for ball sports, but his participation in these activities is severely limited by his condition.
When he was first diagnosed as a 4 year old, Sonny was very active, but since February last year his condition has deteriorated to the point that he is missing out on enjoying lots of activities with his friends. He has become anxious, spent a lot of time in hospital and at specialist appointments, and is distressed about the notion of starting school soon.
In order for Sonny to rediscover his self-esteem, Variety provided Sonny with a brand new school uniform, and funding for school excursions so that he can participate in the same activities as his peers. The scholarship will also cover the costs of tennis lessons for Sonny, so that he can hone his skills – who knows, we may just have the next Dylan Alcott on our hands!
Good luck for your first day of school Sonny, we can’t wait to hear all about it!
