The Sun is Shining in Frankston
On Thursday 19 April, Variety – the Children’s Charity presented a brand new Sunshine Coach to Frankston Special Developmental School, ensuring students have reliable access to and engage with their local community.
Frankston SDS provides a spacious, friendly and caring learning environment for children and young people who have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. The school’s motto is “learning for life” and there is a sharp focus on the development of functional skills that enable students to live as independently as possible.
The school relies heavily on their existing school bus which is over 15 years old, to transport students to excursions, camps, work placements and more; so when Variety received the application for a replacement vehicle, they were only too happy to assist.
Variety Sunshine Coaches are so named because they enable students to get out and about in the sunshine – in other words, they allow students greater access to their local communities, and the opportunity to engage in extra-curricular activities.
When asked about the presentation, CEO of Variety – the Children’s Charity Victoria, Janette Connolly said, ‘We are delighted to be able to fund a brand new Variety Sunshine Coach for Frankston SDS. We know how much they rely on their current coach and without them, the students wouldn’t be able to get out and about in the community with their peers.’
