Mabel suffers from Transverse Myelitis.
Variety – the Children’s Charity Tasmania has helped four year old Mabel who has recently moved to Tasmania with his family from a refugee camp in Sudan.
Mabel suffers from Transverse Myelitis. Transverse Myelitis is a neurological disorder caused by inflammation across both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord. In Mabel’s case this has resulted in motor strength and control loss from his arms and legs.
Mabel is also at high risk of Scoliosis which causes the spine to bend sideways and rotate along its vertical axis. As a result, postural support is essential for this little chap.
Through funds raised by Variety Tasmania and with much-valued assistance from Tasmanian philanthropist group, Foundation 33, Mabel has now been provided with a lateral stability splint, commonly known as a ‘second skin.’ This ingenious equipment, which has been specially adapted for Mabel’s specific needs, provides improved posture, control, symmetry and stability to the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdles.

Given that Mabel constantly strives to be an active little boy, he is now over the moon to be able to enjoy brand new opportunities associated with spending time outdoors with his brothers and sisters.
