The Variety Youth Ambassador program started in 2020 with a series of online motivational talks for Variety’s Heart Scholarship recipients aged 14 – 25 years during the COVID-19 lockdown. The talks were designed specifically to support these talented young people who were struggling with the physical and social impacts of the lack of access to their sporting facilities, team and coach due to COVID-19.

Following the success of the online talks, Variety hosted a BBQ and a talk with The Lady Mayoress for the Youth Ambassadors which provided an opportunity to discuss the group’s future plans and a much-needed chance to socialise.

The group identified that they would like to work together to advocate for children and young people living with a disability and raise awareness within the wider community.
Variety plans to hold regular gatherings for the Youth Ambassadors to give these young people a platform to discuss ideas and assist with developing their self-confidence, public speaking skills, leadership skills, employment skills and more. Furthermore, the program will bring this group of young people together allowing them to engage with those facing similar challenges and provide peer-to-peer support as they make the journey to adulthood.
