Variety Kids Sports Camp – a life-changing weekend for Queensland kids
This year’s Variety Kids Sports Camp was held on the Gold Coast where 50 children, along with families and volunteers, took part in a life-changing weekend, creating memories to last a lifetime.
As you’ll see from this video, and the pictures below, it was an inspiring and uplifting occasion not just for the kids, but for everyone who attended.
Sam, from our Kids Support Team, shares, “It means so much for kids to attend the Sports Camp because they get to try new things with people just like them. They don’t have to be nervous if they can do it, or if they can’t do it – they’re all the same, having fun, just being kids!”
For families, Kids Support Coordinator Kellie says, “The Sports Camp gives them an opportunity to see their children be like other children, to have the same opportunities as everyone else. As parents, we want our kids to feel supported, loved, and included – and watching the parents of kids at the camp step back and feel proud that their child is accepted feels very special.”
“Our kids are so capable,” Kellie adds, “And I think it’s great for parents to see them have this foundation for independence at an early age – to see what they’re capable of and what’s possible in future.”
It was great to see the kids let their guard down, make new friends, and celebrate many milestones. The memories created at the Sports Camp genuinely will last a lifetime!
As with all Variety events, we absolutely could not run the Variety Kids Sports Camp without your support. Apart from the costs, we also rely on the support of 30 volunteers, including some of our Variety Paralympians and many of our Bashers.
Other organisations step in to support us, such as Sporting Wheelies, providing equipment and expertise, and the Runaway Bay Lions Club, who put on a BBQ with all the trimmings, completely free of charge to our participants. Special thanks also goes to Swimming Queensland, Pure Tennis Runaway Bay, Hiya Health, The Studio Springfield Dance, Mentor 4 Me 2, Now I Can Run, Dejay Medical, and EveryBody eBikes.
