Trampoline and sensory swing brings dignity to Kai
Kai is 11 years old and lives with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), severe anxiety, ADHD and PTSD. Kai’s parents were unable to care for him – and so he is now in the loving arms of his grandparents, Samantha and Stuart.
Kai was born 10 weeks’ premature, which led to a condition called Protracted Bacterial Bronchitis and asthma, as his lungs didn’t have time to develop properly. He is being treated by Queensland Children’s Hospital for his lung problems and an eating disorder.
As a result of the challenges he faces, Kai has low muscle tone and core stability, along with fine and gross motor problems. Consequently, Kai follows a 2-hour school day schedule, as navigating the community can be difficult for him.
In addition to these physical challenges, Kai experiences significant sensory issues. His therapists are working diligently to help him learn, while reducing the number of problems he faces.
All in all, Kai has had a very tough start in life.
Kai’s grandparents reached out for a grant to supply a trampoline and sensory swing to assist with Kai’s regulation, support his gross motor skills and development, and help in calming and grounding his nervous system when his body releases anxiety and trauma.
When Variety’s Kids Support team shared with Samantha that Variety will be able to offer a grant, she was overcome with relief. The grant has removed financial pressure from the family, providing Kai with freedom to move safely in his own backyard. It also provides him with a bonding experience with his siblings, who are also under their grandparents’ care.
The swing set is not only for fun – but supports Kai and his family on so many levels.
Kai’s family is looking forward to this year’s Variety Children’s Christmas Party in November where they will be special guests. Kai is already excited about the chance to have a photo taken with Santa.
Thank you to Paul Quarrel who introduced Kai to Variety!
