Sunshine ahead for kids with limited speech
Children with complex communication needs will have the chance to find their voices thanks to a generous donation from the Morning Sunshine Foundation, to establish the Variety Motor Mouth Camp in Queensland.
Part of a two-year funding commitment, the significant contribution will see the successful camp program launch in Queensland in November 2025, as well as expand the program in Western Australia through the addition of a second annual camp.
The Variety Motor Mouth Camp empowers children who have limited speech and rely on an electronic communication device/talker – called Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices – to better express themselves. It has been running successfully in Western Australia since 2011.
Over three days, families receive one-on-one support from speech pathologists and occupational therapists. Each camp provides workshops tailored for young AAC users, respite and AAC tips for siblings who often act as young carers, and practical training for parents and carers, to build the whole family’s confidence using their AAC device.
Erin Lazarou, General Manager of Variety – the Children’s Charity of Queensland said the Morning Sunshine Foundation’s funding will enable the life changing camp to take place in Queensland for the first time.
“Thanks to the Morning Sunshine Foundation, Queensland children and families will be able to access the intensive therapy and support they need to become more confident communicators using AAC,” she said.
“By funding the new Queensland camp and a second camp in Western Australia, the Foundation is helping to grow this much-needed program’s reach and impact across the country.”
A Morning Sunshine Foundation representative said: “We recognise the transformational difference the Variety Motor Mouth Camp makes for children with complex communication needs and their families. Our partnership in this program reflects our commitment to helping build a brighter future for every child, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact the expanded camp program will have.”
